Lance Armstrong and Quiznos team up for Colorado bike race

International professional bicycling is coming to Colorado, thanks to a partnership between champion bicyclist Lance Armstrong and Denver-based sub-sandwich chain Quiznos.

The Quiznos Pro Challenge, a seven-day race through the Rocky Mountains, will be held in August 2011.

Armstrong, who won the Tour de France seven times, is familiar with the history of bicycling in Colorado. The state was host to the Coors International Bicycle Classic in the 1980s.

“I’m very excited about the Quiznos Pro Challenge,” Armstrong said. “What started out as a ‘daydream’ of mine on a long ride outside of Aspen will now become a reality.”

Armstrong and Colorado Governor Bill Ritter started looking at bringing professional biking to the state last year. Quiznos was eager to be the sponsor.

Ellen Kramer, chief communications officer at Quiznos, said they are always looking for events that interest their customers.

“With the creation of the Quiznos Pro Challenge we aim to promote an active lifestyle while bringing an exciting new pro-cycling event to a growing audience of fans in the United States,” Kramer said.

In May, Quiznos announced a strategy to open 600 new franchises across the U.S., and this week released a plan to expand its international presence.
