The meeting sought to help parents stay involved in their children's lives at a time when many slip away. "Tweens are facing greater academic challenges, higher stress levels and harder social adjustments when making the transition to middle school," said Julie Hoyes, executive director of the Sylvan Learning center in Garner. She went on to say that "parental support" was an important part of making sure children grew up the right way. Sylvan made news recently when its branch in Baltimore, Maryland, held a similar back to school function for both parents and students. It sought to help with the back-to-school transition.
