To determine whether an outdoor lighting project is Dark Sky compliant, the association offers six questions – Is the lighting pleasant?  Is the lighting neighborly (does it provide light without intruding on a neighbor’s privacy)?  Does the lighting aid visibility for the area it is intended to light?  Does the lighting provide safety and security?  Does the lighting, while performing its function, conserve energy?  Does the lighting protect the night sky?   Good lighting, by the Dark Sky Association’s definition, provides lights where they are needed, when they are needed, and uses energy efficient sources for that light.
