Starting A Business Degree
If you’re considering starting a business, chances are you aren’t going to do it on a whim. At times it can probably feel like there are a million things you need to know about to successfully start your own business. Some of those things might be completely foreign to a self-starter who doesn’t have a “formal” business education, and some of them are probably foreign to any novice business operator.
For instance, even if you’ve been a mechanic for years and know everything there is to know about cars, do you know what accounting method or business structure you want to use in your garage? Do you know how to get the word out that you’re open for business? Do you know what paperwork you have to fill out just to hire some help? Do you know to ask these kinds of questions?
Even if you answered yes to all of those questions, there are probably a lot more questions, and the chances are that they’ll keep coming and coming, even after you’re off and running. But there are also a lot of ways to make handling all the paperwork and red tape and questions that come from having your own business go a lot more smoothly. Perhaps you can acquire an easy button, or maybe find a genius to bring in as a partner. But since we don’t all know a genius, and an easy button doesn’t exist, the next-best thing would probably be to become an expert yourself by furthering your education.
How can you do that? Well, there are plenty of avenues for furthering your education, and while you may be able to buy a book or two and feel satisfied that you’ve covered your bases, nothing beats earning that advanced degree through relevant coursework. This isn’t to say that you couldn’t succeed without a degree, but the benefits of having one can be felt throughout your career, while one-off seminars might only give you answers without the complete understanding for which you’re looking.
The good news is that there are plenty of continuing education options out there. Aside from the traditional, land-based colleges and universities, there are many online options that can give you the education you’re seeking. Not only that, but because there are so many options, finding the right one for you isn’t nearly as difficult as it may seem at first blush.
If you’re schedule isn’t flexible, an online program may be ideal because you can complete the degree on you own schedule. If you need more structure, and have some schedule flexibility, there is probably a college nearby offering the degree program you need. Don’t dismiss the option because you don’t immediately find an answer – take the time to research your options and make sure you choose the one that suits you best. Education is not one size fits all.
Opening up your own business will never be easy, but having a strong knowledge base can only make things easier. By earning an advanced degree, be it through an online or land-based program, you’ll have set a strong knowledge base that you can rely on, and you’ll give yourself better odds for success in the long run.
