Steve Romaniello
Chief Executive Officer
Carvel Ice Cream
The nation’s first retail ice cream franchise, Carvel is the leading manufacturer of uniquely shaped ice cream cakes, and a leading provider of premium soft serve and hand-dipped ice cream products. Since the company’s founding in 1934, Carvel has become one of the best-loved and most recognized names in its industry. Due largely in part to the group efforts of the company’s management team led by President and CEO Steve Romaniello, the company has more than 500 franchised and foodservice locations serving delicious, high-quality cakes, novelties, cups, cones, sundaes and shakes and additionally, sells its famous ice cream cakes through over 8,100 supermarkets.
Under Romaniello’s leadership, the Atlanta-based Carvel sold 178 new franchises last year and is on track to sell 200 this year. He aims to double the company's retail operations from the current 500 stores to more than 1,000 stores within five years. Romaniello was named President of the Franchise and Foodservice division at Carvel Corporation in February 2002, and promoted to CEO in April 2003. In November 2004, he was also named President and CEO of FOCUS Brands, Inc., majority owner of Carvel, Cinnabon, and Seattle's Best Coffee International.
"Wherever there are mouths to feed and growing populations, Carvel stores will thrive," he said. "Going out for ice cream with friends and family has never gone out of style."
Carvel recently announced the opening of its 500th store located in Valley View, OH and becomes one of 85 new Carvel outlets that opened during 2004.
“Opening our 500th location is a momentous achievement, and an inspiring testament to the passion and dedication of our franchisees and associates,” said Romaniello. “Celebrating this occasion in a new market makes this success even sweeter as the realization of becoming a nationwide brand becomes one step closer.”
The new location represents a milestone for the company, which has undergone an intense revitalization since being purchased in late 2001 by Roark Capital Group. Now part of newly created FOCUS Brands, an affiliate of Roark and the parent company for Carvel, Cinnabon, and the international division of Seattle’s Best Coffee, the 70 year old ice cream brand has achieved record franchise sales results over the last three years with over 400 new signed franchise agreements, representing a system size increase of 43%.
"The fundamentals are in place for revitalizing stores and bringing customers back in again and again, and now we're starting to see results. We're proving that we're more than just an East Coast brand."
