Prep and Paint Like a Pro - Seven Tips from an Industry Expert that Every Homeowner Should Know

Oaks, Penn. — Homeowners across the US will be painting their exteriors this summer in attempt to spruce up their homes. Painting companies and contractors often leave out vital information or misinform homeowners when it comes to successfully preparing and painting their homes.

“Many people forget or simply aren’t aware of important preparations when it comes to painting their homes,” says Ed Waller, co-founder of CertaPro Painters. “By taking extra measures to ensure the process is done correctly you can extend the life of a paint job and help avoid future hassles.”

Seven timely tips from the experts at CertaPro Painters that your contractor never told you:

1. Preparation is key, and the key to good prepping is to start with a thorough washing of all exterior surfaces. Even if the surface doesn't appear dirty, it must be washed. Protected surfaces such as porch ceiling and overhanging rooflines are especially susceptible to holding dirt because they do not get rinsed in the rain.

2. Use caulking to fill any cracks in trim and siding where rainwater may seep in. Water and moisture are the primary causes of most premature paint failures. Paint alone is often not enough to bridge gaps and cracks in trim and siding.

3. You can over-seal a house! Small gaps and cracks in trim and siding that are well protected from rain and water are often there to allow moisture to get out of the house. Before sealing a crack or gap ask yourself if water could get inside. If it is well protected, leave it alone.

4. Always find the glossiest paint for the exterior. Starting with glossy paint will give you a longer coating life. This type of paint will also be easier to wash and keep clean.

5. Less is more. If you put on too much paint and it doesn't wear away, when it finally starts to go you have a lot of extra coats to scrape off. Two coats is rarely necessary except for drastic color changes or severe exposure to sun and extreme weather conditions.

6. With the quality of today's exterior coatings, you rarely need a full prime coat except on new or bare surfaces. Use good quality acrylic latex exterior paint products and put them on clean surfaces and you will not need an undercoat of primer.

7. You are not stuck with the color of your aluminum or vinyl siding. Today's exterior paints on aluminum and vinyl siding will often outlast their original color and finish. If you are painting for the first time, make sure you apply two coats. If you are painting vinyl, do not paint it any darker than it already is or it may warp in the sun from heat build-up.
