Darcel: Wipes and hand sanitizers can only go so far when it comes to protecting you from germs in high-touch areas like the gym. Tammy: But now one area company says it has a spray that can prevent the spread of bacteria, viruses, and funguses for years. Darcel: And as News 13's Jay Schilty shows us in this special health alert, a professional baseball team is even taking notice. Jay: Nothing like this has ever before been sprayed in this fitness center restroom, locker room, and workout area at Flex Gym in Morganton. Tommy: The coating will last anywhere up to about four years or longer. Jay: Seriously? Tommy: Seriously. Frank: You convention antibacterial products like Clorox and Lysol usually work for about six days. Buzz: You can cut down on the chemicals that you use because our product is going to be working 24/7. Jay: The product is SterileCoat. It's an antimicrobial invisible coating designed to prevent germs from multiplying on surfaces, especially those touched by lots of people during the course of a day, like this treadmill. What's this? Speaker 1: This is an Alumameter and it tests bacteria count is what it does. Jay: All right, so you're testing this treadmill before you coat it? Speaker 1: Right. Jay: Let's see what happens. Speaker 1: All right. What we're going to do, we got a little swab. Going to take a little swab and test every little area where you kind of hold on. Right now you got 164. Jay: That's not dangerously high but this reading is. Speaker 1: 403. Jay: And it could get worse. Allen: We forget about people that may have skin conditions that are contagious or a guy comes in with sumac or something like that. As well as MRSA which is on us, it's just whether it protrudes a cut or anything like that and we get it. Jay: Revisiting sprayed areas only minutes later, shows a safe bacteria count. Speaker 1: Eight. Jay: This type of result is one reason major league baseball's Chicago White Sox is considering the product, perhaps for its ball park, but more likely for its training areas. Allen: I can't spend too much time wiping down every bench after every guy gets finished with a piece because I'm dealing with four to six to twelve guys at one time in the gym. So this just really makes comfort. Jay: And it could make sense beyond the gym. Frank: I think they'll use it in hotels, prisons, grocery stores, the shopping cart buggies. Jay: Potentially more safety than ever in hands-on situations. To give you an idea, the cost to coat the gym equipment and walls we visited would be about $5,500. The product is approved as environmentally safe by the EPA. Health officials we talked with say it has benefit but is no substitute for hand washing. Back to you. [End of Audio] Duration:
