Before signing any documents, veterans<br \/>\nshould pay attention to the following details as future franchise owners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nail Down Your Personal Specifics Before Getting Started<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beyond junk removal, there are several franchise options available to<br \/>\nveteran entrepreneurs. These options range from a wide variety of<br \/>\nindustries to low cost franchises. Opportunities are everywhere, so don\u2019t<br \/>\nfeel as though you should open a franchise in a specific field just because<br \/>\nit looks profitable now. Ask yourself the following questions to help find<br \/>\nyour footing before getting started.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What are you passionate about?<\/strong><br \/>\nDo you love working out? Are your lawn care abilities exceptional? Have<br \/>\nyou ever wanted to own a coffee shop? Narrow down the fields you\u2019re<br \/>\ninclined towards. You might even have had experience in these areas<br \/>\nprior to enlisting in the military. There are plenty of<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/lists\/top-100\/\"><br \/>\nexercise, landscaping, and beverage-based franchises<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\navailable to choose from that could be a great fit for you and your<br \/>\ninterests. When in doubt, attend a trade show or expo in your area to<br \/>\nlearn more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do you know about low cost franchises?<\/strong><br \/>\nVeterans don\u2019t have to invest in expensive franchises if they don\u2019t<br \/>\nhave funds available.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/articles\/how-to-buy-a-low-cost-franchise-12662\/\"><br \/>\nLow cost franchises<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\ndo exist and include non-traditional approaches to storefronts like<br \/>\nkiosks and vending machines. How long does it<br \/>\ntake before the franchise becomes profitable? Are there hidden expenses to<br \/>\nwatch out for? Which aspects of the workload are the most challenging? Do<br \/>\nfranchisors offer training or support to franchisees? You may even ask to<br \/>\nspend some time working at their storefront, if their franchise model<br \/>\ncurrently operates as one. This allows veterans to better understand what\u2019s<br \/>\nin store for them as franchise owners.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from franchisors, veterans that want to break into franchises should<br \/>\nspeak with franchisees. Reach out to past franchisees. Inquire if they<br \/>\nwould be willing to chat with you about their experience, particularly if<br \/>\nit did not go smoothly. It\u2019s not an easy conversation to have, but it\u2019s a<br \/>\nnecessary one. You need understand the good, bad, and the (potentially)<br \/>\nugly of what you\u2019re getting into \u2014 and if it\u2019s really ugly, how to avoid<br \/>\nmaking a big mistake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Review The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After meeting with a franchisor and applying and submitting your franchise<br \/>\napplication, you\u2019ll receive the<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/tips-advice\/business-center\/guidance\/consumers-guide-buying-franchise#FDD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\nFranchise Disclosure Document (FDD)<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\n. This comprehensive set of guidelines \u2014 broken down into 23 parts \u2014 needs<br \/>\nto be as thoroughly reviewed as possible by veterans.<\/p>\n<p>What kind of<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/articles\/quick-primer-fdd-12720\/\"><br \/>\ninformation does the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) cover<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\n? There are sections dedicated to the franchisor\u2019s background, any<br \/>\nrecurring fees, and types of training offered by the franchisor. You\u2019ll<br \/>\nalso uncover information about what the franchise offers customers,<br \/>\ntermination and renewal qualifications, and financial statements that show<br \/>\nthe growth of the franchise over the years.<\/p>\n<p>This is a lot for veteran entrepreneurs, and really any would-be franchise<br \/>\nowner, to take in at once. I cannot provide legal advice, but it is<br \/>\nrecommended that any confusion be addressed with a legal professional. Meet<br \/>\nwith a trusted individual and\/or accountant (especially for the financial<br \/>\nstatements!) to review the document together.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Form An S Corporation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s almost time to become a veteran franchise owner! Before you go,<br \/>\nconsider one more piece of advice. The franchise you buy will need to be<br \/>\nincorporated as a legal structure. Generally, most owners choose to<br \/>\nincorporate or form an LLC. However,<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycorporation.com\/business-formations\/s-corporations.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\nincorporating as an S Corporation<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nmight be an even better bet for the franchise.<\/p>\n<p>This entity essentially tells the federal government that it would like to<br \/>\nbe taxed as a partnership. This allows profits, losses, and deductions to<br \/>\n\u201cpass-through\u201d the entity level and be taxed at the shareholder level.<br \/>\nThanks to this pass-through, S Corporations allow entrepreneurs to avoid<br \/>\ndouble taxation. They can even save money on payroll FICA taxes simply<br \/>\nbecause they incorporated as an S Corp. You are, of course, welcome to<br \/>\nreview this possibility with a legal professional. This will ensure you are<br \/>\nchoosing the best entity for your new franchise.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking into the franchise industry isn\u2019t as intimidating as it seems,<br \/>\nespecially for veteran entrepreneurs who may be worried about entering this<br \/>\nnew workforce. Understand what you want to do, meet with a franchisor,<br \/>\nreview your FDD with a legal professional, and discuss potential entity<br \/>\noptions for incorporation.
