{"id":9285,"date":"2017-05-25T10:29:21","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T14:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.franchisegator.com\/articles\/?p=9285"},"modified":"2025-09-25T07:33:30","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T11:33:30","slug":"3-lessons-from-franchisees-12651","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.franchisegator.com\/articles\/3-lessons-from-franchisees-12651\/","title":{"rendered":"Franchisees Provide 3 Tips to Success in Franchising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s true that the franchises that tend to succeed over the<br \/>\nlong haul come from tried and true sectors: <a href=\"\/industries\/food-restaurant-franchises\/\">restaurants<\/a>, hotels, <a href=\"\/industries\/healthcare-senior-care-franchises\/\">senior care<\/a>,<a href=\"\/industries\/home-services-franchises\/\">home services<\/a>. That almost any concept can be franchised is also true \u2014 kid<br \/>\nyoga, crime scene clean-up, doggie makeovers \u2026 if you can conceive it, there\u2019s<br \/>\na good chance a franchise opportunity exists. Of course, some of these ideas<br \/>\ncatch on, experience rapid growth and then flame out. Others trundle along<br \/>\nnever quite developing the traction to flourish. And a handful end up having<br \/>\nstaying power.<\/p>\n<p>This is not to dissuade anyone from pursuing a new idea in<br \/>\nfranchising. After all, 20 years ago the idea of an all-night fitness center<br \/>\nprobably seemed \u201cout there.\u201d And yet today <a href=\"\/franchises\/anytime-fitness\/\">Anytime Fitness<\/a> is the No. 1 fitness<br \/>\nfranchise in America and in 2015 was the No. 2 overall franchise in <em>Entrepreneur<\/em> magazine\u2019s Franchise 500.<\/p>\n<p>You can find examples of success across the spectrum. But<br \/>\nwhether it\u2019s a concept within the traditional sector or one that could be<br \/>\ncategorized as an outlier, there are consistent markers that distinguish the<br \/>\nwinners from the also-rans. We have compiled these markers into three things every potential franchisee should know:<\/p>\n<h2>1. The franchisee\u2019s affinity for business trumps specific experience.<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019d have a hard time<br \/>\nfinding a successful franchisee who hasn\u2019t brought an \u201call-in\u201d attitude to his<br \/>\ninvestment. On the other hand, it is not hard to find franchisees who are<br \/>\nsuccessful in a business category in which they had little or no practical<br \/>\nexperience. In virtually every franchise category, the former is far more<br \/>\nimportant than the latter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sort of background do we look for? We\u2019re looking for<br \/>\nsomeone with entrepreneurial spirit, who is passionate about teaching<br \/>\nchildren,\u201d said Greg White, vice president of Franchise Development for <a href=\"\/franchises\/kiddie-academy\/\">Kiddie<br \/>\nAcademy<\/a>. \u201cA teaching background is nice to have but not necessary. We have a<br \/>\ndeep training program, online and here at the corporate center, that is<br \/>\nextremely comprehensive to cover our operating, marketing and finance<br \/>\nprocesses. But the franchisee needs to bring the right attitude. That\u2019s one<br \/>\nthing we can\u2019t teach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Honestly assessing your strengths and weaknesses is key. Almost<br \/>\nno one has skills across all the disciplines required to run a successful<br \/>\nbusiness. It requires collaboration and, most often, a team effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our business we find many franchisees have that caring gene<br \/>\nwhich is extremely important,\u201d said Christopher Seman, president of <a href=\"\/franchises\/caring-transitions\/\">Caring<br \/>\nTraditions<\/a>, a franchise specializing in helping seniors and their families<br \/>\ntransition from independence to assisted living. \u201cBut the sales gene is just as<br \/>\nimportant. You still have to generate business, and if that sales mentality and<br \/>\ncapability is missing you must recognize that in yourself and recruit to fill<br \/>\nthat role and ensure your operation\u2019s success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Understand that you can hire experience and expertise in<br \/>\ndisciplines that are new to you. What can\u2019t be hired is the passion to do<br \/>\nwhatever it takes, invest whatever time is required and make all other<br \/>\ninterests (including, sometimes, family and friends) secondary to the success<br \/>\nof your enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Beer, who owns an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franchisegator.com\/franchises\/our-town-america-new-mover-marketing\/\">Our Town America franchise<\/a>, put it this way in a <em>Franchise Business Review<\/em> article: \u201cBe prepared to hit the ground running and maintain a<br \/>\npositive attitude. The first several years of owning a business requires a lot<br \/>\nof hard work but can be invigorating if you keep the long-term goals top of<br \/>\nmind. Surround yourself with positive people who represent a skill set that<br \/>\nwill allow you to spend time in areas where you exhibit strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>2. Beware any franchisor not invested in your success.<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, there are stories where<br \/>\nfranchisees had frequent and useful communication with their franchisor and<br \/>\nstaff in the beginnings of their relationships only to see that support dwindle<br \/>\nwith the passage of time. This journey is a marathon, not a sprint, and it is<br \/>\nincumbent on you to make sure that your franchisor is there to support you over<br \/>\nthe long haul, well after he has received your commitment and your up-front<br \/>\nmoney.<\/p>\n<p>White emphasized the importance a commitment to due diligence<br \/>\nplays in franchisees who succeed. \u201cValidate and verify that you are going to<br \/>\nreceive support from the franchisor,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you meet with the<br \/>\nfranchisor ask them \u2018What is your role, and what can I expect from you?\u2019 What<br \/>\nyou should be hearing is that you will receive continuous support, that there<br \/>\nare business consultants available to you. Verify what happens post-agreement.<br \/>\nAll of these are critical to your success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also critical is aligning with a franchise committed to being<br \/>\nat the leading edge of their industry. In today\u2019s rapidly evolving business and<br \/>\ntechnology climate, businesses that fall behind can quickly fall victim to more<br \/>\nambitious competitors. Your franchisor must be dedicated to leading its<br \/>\nbusiness partners in the right direction, investing the resources to dependably<br \/>\nremain in the vanguard of their industry.<\/p>\n<p>Those franchisors who have the proper support mechanisms in<br \/>\nplace and who are investing the resources to stay out in front in their<br \/>\ncategory will be indispensable allies in your success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile opening up a new business is inherently a risky proposition, for me, by<br \/>\npurchasing a franchise from a well-respected franchisor, I feel that I was able<br \/>\nto reduce the amount of risk involved,\u201d Susan Maranhao told <em>Franchise Business Review<\/em>. Maranhao owns<br \/>\na <a href=\"\/franchises\/wild-birds-unlimited\/\">Wild Birds Unlimited franchise<\/a>. \u201cI also didn\u2019t and still don\u2019t have to be an<br \/>\nexpert in everything,\u201d she added. \u201cI learn from the expertise of the franchise<br \/>\nteam, who provide me with lots of great information to help me run my business.<br \/>\nMy franchisor also has staff whose job it is to both develop and find new<br \/>\nproducts to sell, to develop marketing plans and to provide best practices in<br \/>\nstore operations.\u201d&gt;<\/p>\n<h2>3. Look for a vibrant community of fellow franchisees.<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll find a more revealing<br \/>\nindicator of a franchise than the health and contentment of their franchisees.<br \/>\nSuccessful franchises have a community of franchisees who are active,<br \/>\nsupportive, eager and willing to share information and problem-solving insights<br \/>\nwith one another. That collaborative spirit is in many ways as important as the<br \/>\nformal support and training provided by the franchisor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet<br \/>\ninvolved in the community and network, network, network,\u201d explained Connie<br \/>\nChandler, owner of a <a href=\"\/franchises\/minuteman-press\/\">Minuteman Press franchise<\/a>, in a <em>Franchise Business Review<\/em> article. \u201cGetting your and your company\u2019s<br \/>\nname out there as much as you possibly can is crucial to building your<br \/>\nbusiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, by modeling the actions of others who are already<br \/>\nsucceeding, it\u2019s often easier to achieve your own success. \u201cA little after we started,\u201d<br \/>\nChandler said, \u201cwe were given the name of a Minuteman Press franchise owner who<br \/>\nhad a shop that was a similar size as ours. We spent the entire day with that<br \/>\nowner, and, to this day, we are still not only friends, but we can lean on each<br \/>\nother for advice. As we\u2019ve met more and more fellow franchisees, our support<br \/>\nnetwork has grown even further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The odds of your success are directly related to how much due<br \/>\ndiligence you apply to your evaluation of a franchise. The more you know, the<br \/>\nmore confident you can be that your investment will deliver on your financial<br \/>\nand lifestyle goals.
