Jon Miyabuchi: Enterprising Marketer Rooted in Hawaii
Starting his first company at the ripe age of seven years old, Jon Miyabuchi was bitten early on by the entrepreneur bug. From organizing a neighborhood carnival that benefited Ronald McDonald Charities, to a car washing service with established clientele and set appoinents, Miyabuchi broke entrepreneurial ground early in life. He possesses an intuitive sense for innovative products and solutions and the ability to identify products with high growth potential. At 21, he started a company that kicked off the national "color-changing" product craze. His first company sold color-changing visors (that changed to a different color in sunlight) and the dyes to produce additional color changing items. The company later evolved to wholesale distribution of foods, candies, and snack foods within the state of Hawaii.
After seven years and the introduction of big box retailers such as Costco and Sam's Club to Hawaii, Miyabuchi sensed a change coming in the retail environment. He then shifted gears, moving to the wireless industry helping to launch the digital wireless revolution in Hawaii.
After another four years had passed, Miyabuchi predicted another change on the horizon as digital communications had saturated the market. While working in the wireless industry, Miyabuchi recognized a niche for the casual, dine-in market.
"Fine dining isn't always a choice for many people. My friends and family were looking for a convenient place where they could bring the family or go solo, be served fresh local food and enjoy an affordable sit-down meal," Miyabuchi said. After a year of planning and development, the Hanakai Restaurant concept was born in 2000.
The Hanakai Sushi Bar & Grill Brand
Miyabuchi carefully oversaw the development of the brand as a reflection of Hawaii's Asian and Hawaiian influences. "Hanakai" originates from the Hawaiian words meaning "to work the ocean." Combined with a very likable sumo wrestler logo, Miyabuchi developed a brand that is family friendly and memorable. Hanakai's tagline, "Incredible Sushi at Inexpensive Prices," simply reflects Miyabuchi's mission to offer a new dining concept that appeals to sushi lovers of all calibers.
Unique Franchise Based on Hawaii's Melting Pot
Miyabuchi's concept merged sushi with the diverse multicultural tastes of Hawaii but with a unique twist. With the help of a self-serve conveyor belt, Miyabuchi found a unique and appealing way to put menu items on parade and give customers the freedom to select the dishes they want when they want it.
"Customers don't need to wait by serving themselves and the restaurant basically runs itself. It's a win-win," said Miyabuchi.
Automation of Hanakai's restaurant operations requires less labor than most restaurants. The centerpiece, the conveyor belt, is individually configured to each restaurant's floor plan. Hanakai utilizes a sophisticated scanning system and high-tech dishes embedded with a time-sensitive microchip that automatically removes plates from the conveyor belt at regular intervals. Pricing is done according to the type of plate, so bill calculation is easy and quick. The self-service concept is also kid-friendly for children who want to pick out their own dishes, and the "small plates" encourage young and old customers to try different dishes that they may not have tried if they had to order a full entrée.
Success Built on Core Values
For Hanakai Restaurants, core values are the foundation for success and are demonstrated through the everyday practice of four key values that foster a healthy working environment and is focused on teamwork to achieve customer satisfaction. Core Values include Integrity, Excellence, Personal & Team Best, and Balance.
"When everyone's on the same page, with the same goal, everyone wins," Miyabuchi explained emphatically.
Building the Franchise and Spreading the Aloha to the Mainland
Miyabuchi's desire to "Change the World of Sushi" is taking flight as he franchises Hanakai Sushi Bar & Grill to the Mainland U.S. and several locations are planned to open in 2006.
"Visitors from all over the world come to our restaurant and ask if there's a Hanakai in their neighborhood. When our own customers started voicing in increasing interest in opening up their own Hanakai, I accelerated our franchise plans," Miyabuchi said.
Growing Hanakai Restaurants into the Future
"Experienced or new business owners who embrace our core values and want a unique concept that almost runs itself will see the rewards in the Hanakai concept. We want people who really believe in the product and want to help grow Hanakai and its people to succeed," Miyabuchi said.
