Our Pet Counselors are uniquely trained to engage and educate each customer, which ends in not only a sale today but in years of patronage to grow your Petland business.
The pet industry continues to grow in spite of a challenging economy. U.S. industry expenditures grew from $17 billion in 1994 to $45 billion in 2009 and expected to top $50 billion in 2011*. According to the 2011/2012 National Pet Owners Survey, 62% of U.S households own one or more pets. This equates to 79.9 million homes! Pet ownership is growing! Retail sales are growing! Consumer awareness of what pets need to thrive is growing!
The two largest pet supply chains, Petsmart and Petco (over 2100 company owned stores; they do not offer franchises) achieve limited national market share leaving many markets underserved or not served at all. Unlike some franchised business offerings that require you to find your location, negotiate your own lease and construct your store on your own. The Petland team works side by side with you to determine your location and negotiate the lease with your approval of lease terms. Petland supervises the construction and helps merchandises your store giving you the time for your training, recruiting your Pet Counselor team, and prepare for your grand opening. Petland - flexibility – a scalable business model
Stores can be scaled from 2,500 square feet to over 6,000 square feet. The smaller "community" format store does not offer puppies but does offer tropical fish, birds and small animals as well as the best of the best in pet foods and pet accessories. The larger format "regional / metro suburban" store has a state-of-the-art kennel with a proprietary air handling system for an "odor free" store. This format offers puppies and as a community service, Adopt-A-Pet puppies, a large selection of tropical fish, birds and small animals, and a vast assortment of pet foods and pet accessories.
Not only can you scale the size of your store, but you can choose the size of the market in which you locate it. From small towns with as few as 6,000 people with another 24,000 people in the trade area to the largest cities in the U.S., Petland has a niche opportunity to grow a business.
Training & Support
Petland - preparation for success
Petland provides unparalleled operational training. Management training at our state-of-the-art Business Improvement Center is required for all franchisees. This is followed up by hands-on training at a high velocity, fast-paced training store, and an additional 2 weeks of training in your store for you and your newly recruited Petland team. Continuing education and training is available to you on the internet based Petland University™ to train and monitor your Pet Counselor's pet care and product knowledge as well as quarterly classes in our corporate training center and in specified regions to reach more stores with on-going training opportunities..
Ideal Candidate
Successful Petland franchise owners are outgoing, ambitious, dynamic people who like people who like pets. They possess team building skills and a desire to recruit and develop productive Pet Counselors that make Petland unique in the marketplace. The ideal Petland franchise candidate enjoys managing financial resources, monitoring sales and gross profit margins. Petland requires a candidate to have the resources to convert assets and financial instruments to at least $150,000 liquid capital to invest along with their full time focused attention to the Petland business.
