Franchise Q&A with Shaun Ajani, Montessori League Academy's VP of Franchising

How was your franchise/opportunity originally conceived and started?

The founder’s (Salma Ajani) son went to a Montessori as a two year old. But she was not satisfied, so she got a mentor, who studied with Maria Montessori’s grand-daughter in Italy, as well as got a Masters in Montessori (very rare). This launched a company dedicated to the authentic legacy of Maria Montessori’s philosophy.

What was your original vision for your company? How has that changed over time?

The original unit was started as a product, which would be able to have replicable processes. So, the vision has not changed.

What do you believe is the single most important factor when choosing a franchise?

Besides the obvious successful business, there must be a genuine interest in the philosophy behind the concept.

Why should someone choose your franchise over other similar franchises?

We have a remarkable reasonable entry point (both, funds and effort), so the risk is also lower. We have a low franchise fee (which covers the real estate assistance and full training). Our royalty fee includes everything, nothing to buy.

What makes your industry attractive?

Montessori schools are usually generations in retention. This is not a fad concept. According to the think-tank ISM, the trend is clearly toward the holistic approach, since the parents our transitioning from generation X to millennials. Any other preschool industry will take over ten years to turn their ships. Montessori is already there!

What types of qualities do you look for in potential franchisees?

The franchisee must be willing to learn and understand our commitment toward the Montessori and the upscale look & feel of the center.

What do your franchise fees and royalties cover?

Franchise fee covers all training, and all assistance to opening. Royalty covers full support.

How do territories work for your franchisees?

Territory will cover 5 mile radius and 25,000 population.

Why has your franchise model been successful?

We have a unique method of selecting the location, as well as a full 2 phase, three tier training program, as well as full support.

Where do you see your franchise in 5 years and 10 years?

We would like to expand in selected states with 100 units in the next ten years.

What is your favorite advice for new franchisees to help them succeed?

To understand the brand commitments and take the direction of the company seriously.

What would you tell potential franchisees that may be nervous about the financial burdens of starting a franchise?

A Montessori preschool franchise is the best way to own a preschool with the lowest cost and the lowest risk.

Can you explain your financial assistance?

We have third party loan expert, who will take the candidate through the process.

On average, how long does it take to start a new franchise from the franchisees point of view?

Three to nine months.

What was your background and experience before founding this franchise?

The founder had extensive training as a one-to-one with a mentor, as well as advance degrees.
