Industry Q&A with Shaun Ajani, Montessori League Academy's VP of Franchising

Provide an overview/ description of your industry.  Include reasons why it’s a great industry to start a business in today.

According to Forbes magazine, June 2014, childcare business growth will be between 6% to 7%. Child care is one of the oldest and most reliable business of all times. Especially, the Montessori childcare business, since think-tank trends show that the new generations of parents will demand a more holistic approach, like the Montessori always has been.

How has your industry changed in the last 10 years?  20 years?

The childcare industry has remained the same for the last 100 years, however the changes are on the way, and our particular company is prepared. 

What trends do you see in your industry over the next 5 years?  Next 10 years?

A trend toward independent and cooperative learning, unique to our Montessori methodology. 

What is the biggest concern about your industry that a franchisee candidate should be aware of and investigate?

All states have heavy requirements for industry licenses and standards. If unchecked, the hidden costs can be too much. 

Why do you think your company stands out in the industry?

The Montessori League Academy positions to be a “disruptive” franchise business, by offering its franchisees the opportunity to own a Montessori preschool franchise, starting at $350,000, instead of the usual hefty $1 to $4 million, by strategically making Montessori a uniquely duplicable platform, and by structuring their and fee and support in a creative program.

What makes your franchise/ business opportunity more attractive than your competitor’s?

What Montessori League’s management team has done is incorporate business systems, processes and technology into the Montessori market segment to create a scalable and duplicable business platform.  There is more potential today than ever before in education with family’s willingness to invest in their children’s well being and development, Montessori League Academy is poised to benefit from this enormous market demand

Describe the ideal candidate.  Do you think your requirements are any different than your competitor’s?

We are looking for prospects, who want to build a successful business empire, but unlike any other business opportunity, we also want our prospects to help prepare children to go anywhere that their dreams, interests, and passions take them. We believe that cultivating curious and inventive personalities in children can help them go further and achieve more. A franchisee will be able to offer the Montessori Method with Ivy League inspired curriculum, which gives children a truly unique learning experience.

What’s the strongest skill you require in a candidate?  


Describe the working environment of your franchisees.  Is your environment typical of other companies in your industry?

The Montessori preschool is a beautiful prepared environment, build in a strip shopping center. 

Why has your company been successful?

Our brand raise the children’s natural curiosity of learning, and to invoke a love of learning, which stays with them for lifetime. 

What advice would you give someone interested in buying a franchise in your industry?  

To carefully study what exactly is covered in all the fees being charged, especially if any “future” fees will be levied. To ensure that the franchisor will hold your hand, from the very beginning, for example helping negotiate with the landlord, and discussing all the particulars with the architect, as well as train and support through the lifetime of the business.

How much experience in this industry should a franchisee candidate have should they consider buying a franchise in your industry?

We do not require any particular experience in the industry.
