Industry Qa With Nextgen Great Sealcoating President Tim Smeltz
Provide an overview/ description of your industry.
Sealcoating, or more precisely asphalt maintenance is a multi billion dollar business that currently is fragmented and rudderless similar to landscaping was decades ago. The industry is begging for standards and consistency and we’re ready to take advantage of this weakness.
How has your industry changed in the last 10 years? 20 years?
It hasn’t changed much other than the primary material being classified carcinogenic by the USGS. Some companies offer horrible, inconsistent alternatives but basically the industry is unchanged, dominated by low quality “fly by nighters”.
What trends do you see in your industry over the next 5 years? Next 10 years?
Moving away from coal tar based sealers and towards eco-friendly, non-carcinogenic materials and hopefully into a more professional trade.
What is the biggest concern about your industry that a franchisee candidate should be aware of and investigate?
There are many low standard operators, that bring down consumer confidence so we are constantly educating the public on what can and can’t be accomplished by sealcoating etc.
Why do you think your company stands out in the industry?
Consistent customer service coupled with eco-friendly, non toxic materials. Our A+ Better Business Bureau rating doesn’t hurt either.
What makes your franchise/ business opportunity more attractive than your competitor’s?
There are other players in the industry, but no one brings to the table what we do.
1. 15 years experience
2. A proprietary product
3. A fully-staffed call center
Describe the ideal candidate. Do you think your requirements are any different than your competitor’s?
Someone with a leadership background from a blue collar job-think foreman, supervisor etc. that want to own their own business OR 2.) a middle manager that wants to escape corporate America. A franchise can be operated as stand alone or with another concept/business and can be done hands on or off.
What’s the strongest skill you require in a candidate?
Strong work ethic.
Describe the working environment of your franchisees. Is your environment typical of other companies in your industry?
Outdoors, some driving.
Why has your company been successful?
Customer-centric and high quality, non toxic materials.
What advice would you give someone interested in buying a franchise in your industry?
Give us a call! Seriously, this industry isn't for everyone; and that can be said for any industry. Let's connect, and see if there is a good mutual fit.
How much experience in this industry should a franchisee candidate have should they consider buying a franchise in your industry?
None needed. We offer up to 10 days of training, including 5 at their locale.
