Develop a Specialty

There’s nothing wrong with having a body shop that services all kinds of vehicles. In fact, you might need to do just that to have enough business month after month. However, it’s a good idea to consider developing a specialty that your shop can become known for around the area. For example, you could specialize in working on off-road vehicles or vehicles from a particular manufacturer. If you develop a reputation for doing great work for those kinds of vehicles, you’ll give your business a foundation on which you can build and grow.

Service at All Costs

It only takes a few bad customer experiences to ruin the reputation of a business. And, since so much of the body shop industry runs on referrals, you certainly don’t want your customers speaking poorly of your shop. The goal is simple: make sure every single customer leaves happy, even if you have to go to great lengths to make that happen. Spending a little more time and money to finish a project right will be worth it if that customer goes on to tell everyone how great you are.

Build Relationships

One of the best ways to get business as a body shop is to get to know other professionals in the automotive market in your area. Of course, businesses that compete directly with body shops won’t want to help you out, but there are plenty of businesses in adjacent niches who always need somewhere to refer customers for services they don’t provide. Get to know the owners and managers of auto shops that don’t do body work, like auto parts stores, used car lots, and similar companies. These connections could go a long way toward making your venture a success.
